The Redeemed Christian Church of God was established in 1952 by the late Pastor Josiah Akindayomi. He was an illiterate. Though he did not know how to read or write, God gave him the name of the church in a vision. Since he was incapable of writing, all he could do was to scribble down what he saw in the vision. And that was how the church got the name, The Redeemed Christian Church of God.
He served God with zeal and fervency. God made a covenant with him, and promised him that He would meet this church on His return and would take the church to all countries of the world. This is being fulfilled in our time. The Church continued to grow under the leadership of this great man of God until 1981, when he passed on to glory.
Then the mantle of leadership fell on the present General Overseer, Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye. God began to fulfill the covenant he made with the founder, through the present leader. The church has been experiencing phenomenal growth. RCCG has now been taken to almost every part of the world. Since 1981, an explosion began with the number of branches growing in leaps and bounds. At the last count, there were at least about 2500 parishes of the Redeemed Christian Church of God in Nigeria alone.
On the International scene, the church is present in other African nations including Cote D’Ivoire, Ghana, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Gambia, Cameroon, and South Africa. In Europe the ministry has established presence in United Kingdom, Germany, and France. In North America there are parishes all over the place including the Caribbean states of Haiti and Jamaica.
Today, God is still doing marvelous deeds through the Redeemed Christian Church of God, worldwide. One of the better-known programs of the church is the Holy Ghost Service, an all-night miracle service that holds on the first Friday of every month at the Redemption Camp at Km. 46, Lagos-Ibadan expressway. The average headcount of those who attend the Service is about 500,000. The Holy Ghost Service is now held in London quarterly. Holy Ghost Service has also started in the US. However, it is still on a yearly basis for now.
